Feb. 27 and 28 we competed at State Deca in Des Moines. The competition was held on a Sunday with the awards presented on Monday. Following the competition, we were able to go out to eat and then head to our hotel where there was a dance for the students. Twenty-Two schools from the state of IA were involved , so there were lots and lots of students! The students had an excellent time while the chaperones were exhausted! :)
I am proud to say that I am taking 6 students to the National Deca Competition in Orlando. Amanda Kavan and Richard Khamsouk competed as a team in the written event of Hospitality and Tourism Operations Research. Amanda Kavan, Desmond Khounlo, and Luke Anderson competed in the written event of Financial Operations Research. Joseph Patton competed individually in the event called Principles of Business Administration and Management and placed 2nd overall. Tori Peck competed individually in the event called Principles of Marketing and placed 1st overall.
The students that qualified in their category had a hard choice to make as to whether they would compete at nationals. Many of the DECA students are involved in other extra-curricular activities that have meets at the same time as nationals. Fortunately, all but one of my students decided to compete. Luke Anderson will stay in SL and compete in a golf meet--we will miss him! ;)
The National Competition will take place April 30 through May 3. It will be an exhausting week, but will be well worth it!
